A new study by the University of St Andrews has conducted the largest ever combined study of bat genomes and fossils.This study suggests that bats may have originated in Europe around 65 million years ago and then spread worldwide.This study has revealed that the development of flight ability, like 'echolocation' (the ability to locate by means of echo), occurred in the early stages of bat evolution. This opens the way for research into the genetic basis of bats' extraordinary lifespan and disease resistance.
